shooting RED in Texas ...
We arrived via a snow storm in Atlanta and jumped ship (planes) to get to Dallas Texas for our prep and final location scout. Simon was with MP&E equipment rental getting the RED camera and zeiss lenses we needed, while Lee and myself met up with Nick and Mike from Scent-Lok. Found our locations, talked with local crew, talked about shots and lighting, and where to use the crane. More and more I have been using a crane in almost all my shoots! Moving the camera around is a big plus even if its a small move it just adds to the look. And as usual the RED camera was our choice besides film.
My usual kit of lenses on exterior shoots is a wide 12 or 14 zeiss, set of super speeds, 185 zeiss, 400 2.8 canon, and a short zoom.( this time it was the RED 18-50 zoom). Although looked great outside on a 5.6 and above, it did not perform well in low light (being a 3 T stop) The lens looked messy or the quality of the image was not to my standards at the bottom end and we switched to primes immediately.
The crane worked as well as we wished for and the RED camera was a champ. Of all the RED shoots we have done, there have been very few problems and most of them were learning curves of our own.
As usual the people at Scent-lok were not only very professional but always fun to work with. Nick and Mike take the awards for the best clients to work with! Our Gaffer, Darrel was always busy changing something on the lighting as we change our minds on every shot, trying to make things for the better. Kenny our crane operator was moving his heavy gear from one location to another with no complaints and a hustler he was.
Texas is a great place to shoot with very friendly people and experienced crews. Every where we went everyone was extremely helpful in many ways. The weather was just right although a bit dusty, due to water shortage.
I must say the people at MP&E were extremely helpful. We had a problem with one of our hard drives and it did not have the footage we thought was there. I called ANNA and she put me in touch with Brian who owns MP&E and he personally copied the drives for me and sent them to me. If your in Texas and need a RED camera call MP&E!
